IRS Announces 2006 Standard Mileage Rate

The IRS announced the 2006 standard mileage rate for computing deductible medical expenses.  The new rate is 18 cents per mile and takes effect January 1, 2006.  Yes, the use of an automobile to obtain medical care may be a deductible medical expense if the expense is primarily for, and essential to, medical care.

Due to rising fuel costs the IRS made a special one-time adjustment in September raising the rate to 22 cents per mile for the last four months of the year, up from 15 cents for the first eight months of 2005.
