The IRS announced the 2006 standard mileage rate for computing deductible medical expenses. The new rate is 18 cents per mile and takes effect January 1, 2006. Due to rising fuel costs the IRS made a special one-time adjustment in September raising the rate to 22 cents per mile for the last four months of the year, up from 15 cents for the first eight months of 2005.
